How Reverse Calculation Works

When a client pays you $1,000, you don't actually receive $1,000. Stripe's standard rate of 2.9% + $0.30 means you net only $970.70 — a $29.30 shortfall. If you quoted $1,000 hoping to pocket that full amount, you've already lost money before the work begins.

Reverse calculation solves this with the formula: charge = (desired + fixedFee) ÷ (1 − percentFee). This accounts for the circular dependency: the percentage fee is applied to the charge amount, not the desired net. Simply adding 2.9% to your desired amount would leave you slightly short every time.

For real projects this adds up fast. A $5,000 fixed-price contract actually requires a charge of $5,149.74 on Stripe to net exactly $5,000. Quoting the round number means eating $149.74 in fees — across a dozen projects a year, that's real money walking out the door.

Different processors have very different fee structures, so the gross-up varies significantly. Wise's flat-fee model may be cheaper for large international transfers, while PayPal's rates change based on payment method. Use this calculator to compare processors and find the most cost-efficient way to get paid.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the reverse fee calculation work?

The calculator uses the formula: charge = (desired + fixedFee) ÷ (1 − percentFee). This gives the exact gross amount to invoice so that after the processor deducts its percentage and fixed fees, you receive precisely what you entered.

Why can't I just add the fee percentage to my desired amount?

Because the fee is calculated on the charge amount, not on your desired net. If you want $100 and add 2.9%, you'd charge $102.90 — but the fee on $102.90 is $3.28, leaving you with only $99.62. The correct charge is $103.19. The circular dependency requires algebraic inversion.

Which processor results in the lowest gross-up?

It depends on the transaction size and type. Wise tends to be cheapest for large international bank transfers due to its low percentage fee. For small domestic card payments, PayPal's lower fixed fee can win. Use the example table below to compare across common amounts.

Can I pass the processing fee on to my client?

In many jurisdictions you can add a surcharge, but card network rules and local laws vary. The safest approach is to build the fee into your quoted price using reverse calculation — your invoice total already covers the fee, with no surcharge line required.

Does the calculator support all rate types?

Yes. Use the Rate Type dropdown to select the rate that matches your transaction — domestic card, international card, ACH, and others depending on the processor. The calculation updates instantly for each rate.

Can I share or bookmark my calculation?

Yes. The URL updates automatically as you type, encoding the amount, processor, and rate type as query parameters. Copy the address bar to share the exact calculation with a client or colleague.
